There was a time in my life when I didn’t think much of poetry. It was never at the forefront as a creative outlet for me personally and I tended to look down on it as an art form. That changed for me when I was in college. I took a creative writing class in my second semester, and I was super excited to start writing and sharing short stories. So, it came as a little surprise to me to find that the first half of the class sessions would be on poetry. I was incredibly disappointed.
I was a forthcoming student, so I didn’t hide my reservations from my professor, but he was quick to show me that poetry was a lot more than I thought. So, I delved into it. I quickly found myself enjoying every session. I found myself writing poetry instead of fiction as a primary creative outlet for a time. I certainly got criticism for my pieces, but that encouraged me; that’s how I knew I had something to work with. I continued to nurture my poetic ability and study throughout the rest of my years in college.
I won’t ever claim that poetry is my new life’s purpose or that I’m some poetic master, but I’m proud of my grown abilities in the genre enough that I want to share some of my work. I hope it can impact at least someone. Enjoy!
